History

Autism is constantly in the news and there are many questions, old and new, that can only be resolved via basic scientific research. We focus on studies of neuro-cognitive processes, that is, what happens in the brain and in the mind of the autistic person. We study this over the whole life, not only in children, but also in adolescents and adults, and in people with and without intellectual disability. One of the enduring questions we continue to ask is: How might psychological theories help to provide further insights for the core characteristics of autism?

To address this question, the autism@icn group was set up in 2007 by Uta Frith. This network aims to stimulate and facilitate research on autism and other conditions associated with autism. A further aim is to enable other cognitive neuroscientists to test their theories using a well-documented range of participants in collaboration with autism researchers based at the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience.
